Wills, Powers of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship - Just Do It.
Why this mortgage broker will always ask where you are at.
After many years as a financial planner, it is my experience that for most people, this is an area where, either its the last thing on their to do list and never get to it or, they are in denial and acting somewhat like an Ostrich.
Blended families, children with different needs and life stages, adult children with partners, people feeling they are owed something for some reason, farm succession tension, addiction and all the things, result in procrastination as its all too hard to think it through.
So even though you are speaking with myself as a mere mortgage broker, this is why I will ask you the question “Do you have a will?”, followed by “When was the last time you updated it?” Call me a friendly nudger.
I may refer you to a professional in this space if thats of interest, but it is also something I will put in my diary to follow you up to introduce some accountability.
I have personally seen really poor outcomes of multiple situations where proper wills and power of attorneys aren’t in place. It causes so much pain and stress for loved ones at an already stressful time.
In addition, once you have debt overlaying the situation, I believe you owe it to your beneficiaries to have your financial affairs clearly resolved in order that debts can be effectively managed when you travel to the great housing situation in the sky.
Lastly, I highly recommend purchasing the attached (try Amazon or Booktopia). I have one and my kids know where it is stashed and what to do if the proverbial bus comes along. It is so comprehensive. For example, it asks about your specific wishes for each of your pets. There’s a page for your social media accounts, club memberships, where keys are located, business assets and all the other things you would never even think of without prompting, all in one place.
So in summary, estate planning, just do it.
If you have someone in your life who might be an Ostrich, consider forwarding them this email. Only because you care and not because you want the 1973 Ford Mustang parked in the garage.
